ABOUT US

Jaime and Maria Luisa have studied under excellent folkloric instructors since the early 1980's. In 1998, they began competing as dance partners in Mexico at the National Competition of Huapangos in San Joaquin, Queretaro. They are eight time finalists competing against over 500 couples each time. The tradition of doing well at this competition has been passed to BFMI students who have also qualified as finalists and have even won second place! BFMI is extremely proud of its second place finish because it was accomplished in Mexico and acknowledges that the group is able to maintain an accurate representation of the traditional Mexican folkloric dance culture despite living in the United States.

Since January of 2005, Jaime and Maria Luisa Carrillo continue to donate their time and effort leading the group; one hundred percent of money collected from performances and fundraisers is invested back into the group. As part of the BFMI mission to bring art and culture to the community, all new participants are welcomed regardless of experience.

The group is free of charge to the community and stands as a nonprofit organization. BFMI was nominated for the 2014 People's Choice of Detroit by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and were announced  winners as they performed at the Fillmore Theater in downtown Detroit. Other recent performances include the Frida Opera, Detroit Institutes of Arts, Detroit River Days, Detroit Tigers, Toledo Mudhens, Arts, Beats, & Eats, Campus Martius, University of Michigan, and many more. We maintain a close network of friends and colleagues in the arts, cultural, and folklore world in the U.S. and Mexico for knowledge exchange and expansion. We teach with the motto: "You don't stop dancing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop dancing."
